FlexTech International Industrial Spring School

May 29-31, 2024 - Biarritz, France

Once a small fishing village, Biarritz was made fashionable after 1854 by Napoleon III and his Spanish empress, Eugénie. After gaining popularity as a seaside resort favored by French royalty, Biarritz became more cosmopolitan, attracting the jet set and acquiring a reputation as “the queen of beaches and the beach of kings.” The British are largely responsible for its growth as a winter residence.

Biarritz's casino (opened August 10, 1901) and beaches make the town a notable tourist center for Europeans and East Coast North Americans. The city has also become a prime destination for surfers worldwide, developing a nightlife and surf-based culture.

Biarritz lies along the Bay of Biscay, adjacent to Bayonne and Anglet, and 11 miles (18 km) from the Spanish border.

Today, the Basque Coast has diversified activities, including a growing engineering school, ESTIA Institute of Technology, located in Bidart – next door to Biarritz. ESTIA has a strong undergraduate program, several graduate programs, and research activities, including the FlexTech Chair, an ESTIA—CentraleSupélec (Paris Saclay University) research program on Human Systems Integration for increasingly autonomous sociotechnical systems.

FlexTech HAT-HSI-2024 International Spring School is organized in Biarritz by the FlexTech Chair, not only for its magnificent location but also for its diverse connections with industry, including aeronautics, space, oil and gas, transport mobility, and fashion.
